At First, There Was A Nut

Solo Show
Galerie Ego, Marfa
May 2025

As a side adventure to my main body of work, these paintings show a deconstructed point of view of home. Architectural elements become less prominent, and the inside gets blurred with the outside. Abstracted nomadic vehicles live alongside deeply rooted trees creating a stark contrast.

The gallery space is a small laundry room in Marfa which makes for an unexpected and intimate setting. A hanging piece of painted plexiglass gives the characteristics of a reflective window. Behind it, a similar sized piece of walnut frames it, suggesting an interior. This seemingly floating combination turns the small laundry room into a home without walls. A tiny square painting lays flat in the dryer, begging the viewer to lean in close to get a glimpse into the painted figure’s distorted world.

Plywood walls of the gallery echo the DIY nature of each piece in the show. Hardware store materials are elevated to celebrate the everyday home focused handyperson. Drop clothes are stretched instead of fine art canvas, plywood and hobby board make up the framing, and a Ryobi flashlight illuminates the clear acrylic window sculpture.
